The three percentage problems
Every percentage question is one of three forms. Finding a percent of a number: multiply by the percent over 100 (25% of 200 = 0.25 × 200 = 50). Finding what percent one number is of another: divide and multiply by 100 (50 ÷ 200 × 100 = 25%). Percentage change: (new − old) ÷ old × 100.
A useful symmetry trick: X% of Y always equals Y% of X. So 8% of 25 is the same as 25% of 8 — which is obviously 2.
Percentage points vs. percent
When a rate moves from 10% to 15%, it has risen 5 percentage points but 50 percent. News and statistics often blur this distinction — knowing it helps you read claims about interest rates, polls and taxes accurately.
Frequently Asked Questions
▸How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
Multiply the number by the percentage divided by 100. Example: 15% of 80 = 80 × 0.15 = 12.
▸How do I work out percentage increase?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, then multiply by 100. From 50 to 65: (65−50)/50 × 100 = 30% increase.
▸Can a percentage be more than 100?
Yes — 150% of 40 is 60, and a value that triples has increased by 200%.
