Fraction arithmetic rules
To add or subtract fractions, convert to a common denominator first: a/b ± c/d = (ad ± cb)/bd, then simplify. To multiply, multiply across: a/b × c/d = ac/bd. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal: a/b ÷ c/d = ad/bc.
Simplifying means dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). 18/24 simplifies to 3/4 because the GCD of 18 and 24 is 6.
Frequently Asked Questions
▸How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Find a common denominator (the product works always; the least common multiple is tidier), convert both fractions, add the numerators, then simplify.
▸How do I convert a fraction to a decimal?
Divide the numerator by the denominator. 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. The calculator shows this automatically.
